Sealing Exposed Aggregate
Exposed aggregate concrete has become a popular decorative concrete style that is a great way to enhance the look of driveways, paths, pool decks and patios. Basically, this finish is achieved by removing the top layer of concrete to expose the rocks and pebbles that lie within the substrate.
While this process creates the nice looking exposed aggregate finish, it does make the concrete highly porous due to the top layer being removed and exposing the open pores of the cement.
This means that exposed aggregate areas are more susceptible to moisture damage and are easily stained. Virtually any liquid that comes into contact with the surface will quickly absorb deep into the substrate and potentially cause staining to occur.
By applying a suitable sealer to exposed aggregate, you can help keep this finish in pristine condition, locking out moisture so the concrete doesn’t stain or blemish over time.
Sealers can be applied to new or existing exposed aggregate surfaces and many of these products will also enhance the look of the concrete in addition to providing protection, blocking harsh UV rays and inhibit the growth of mould and mildew.
When it comes to choosing a sealing product for exposed aggregate, there are basically two types to choose from, penetrating or topical.
Penetrating sealers commonly preserve the concrete without changing the look, allowing the exposed aggregate to retain its natural appearance and colour. As the name suggests, these penetrate into the substrate and seal the aggregate without leaving behind a visible surface film. While penetrating sealers provide excellent moisture and stain protection, they won’t secure loose stones or prevent stones from coming loose. So, if you need to secure loose stones on your exposed aggregate areas, an acrylic sealer is a better choice.
Topical acrylic concrete sealers create a film barrier over the surface of the substrate and will protect and enhance it, often with a high-gloss finish. These coatings are usually UV resistant and help to reduce concrete dusting, staining, hot-tire pickup, mould, mildew and efflorescence.
As acrylic sealers are topical, where the sealer sits on top on the surface, they can help to hold the aggregate pebbles in place, reduce pitting and extend the life of exposed aggregate concrete. Depending on weather and traffic use, the exposed aggregate concrete may need to be re-sealed every 12 to 36 months when using this type of sealer.
Regardless of the type of sealer product you use, before application the substrate must be thoroughly cleaned and free of dirt and stains. Depending on the age of the concrete, it may also be necessary to perform an acid wash as part of the preparation process.
